The Philippines is home to a staggering number of children who live on the streets. Faced with a multitude of every day challenges, many stop schooling. Some have taken on the task of encouraging the children to dream big for themselves and their families. These are the life and times of a volunteer tutor in the Philippines.

On August 2 let's help make their lives better
Greetings Volunteer,
God has a purpose for everything.
Since we didn't have tutoring last time, I got to meet 2 important
people. These people are AA members. That's Alcoholics Anonymous. Many of you know that the children
we tutor have fathers with drinking
problems.
These people want to help
and may have some tips for us who want to address this
issue.
Come this Saturday?
You don't have to be a whiz at Math and English, we just
need you to listen to
the children and
to help them read books (provided) and maybe understand their
lessons (if you need assistance,
other tutors may be asked). Don't be apprehensive
about forgetting the basics from
gradeschool, we've forgotten too.
It's a team and we help each other remember. What's
most important is
that these children make a friend who encourages them to go
on.
Just 2 hours to encourage them that learning can be
enjoyable (or that it is possible to
understand) is more than enough. Seeing people who care is
enough.
Please join us on:

- ballpen and scratch paper
- just some enthusiasm!!!
- OPTIONAL: If you have wifi

answer but someone else's can be borrowed in case
you don't have :)
This Saturday is coming and we pray
that:
1. We will have a good attendance of both
volunteers and children.
2. That that children will be able to enjoy the
session and be better at school.
3. That the volunteers will enjoy their session
with the children.

We are calling for more volunteers! Everyone is
invited. You don't have to be a tutor. You just need to have
a heart of compassion for these young ones.
What will we teach? Primarily English and Math. If
you are able to teach other subjects that is great but we
don't require professional tutors. What we need are
people who are encouraging and positive for the children
to emulate.
How? Come and the children will ask you about
their homework or you can tell them a story or do some
simple arithmetic with them.
Please consider coming. When we lack tutors, we cannot
give the attention they badly need since we have to tutor 2 or 3
or 4 students at a time. We aim to have one child to one
tutor.
If you have more questions please feel free to contact me. Please confirm if you are coming so we can assign you a
child to Shannon at shannon_capati@yahoo.com

July 19 A Lesson on Phalenges
Greetings Volunteer,
Last session was a workout but it was worth it.
The barangay had a meeting upstairs in the third floor so we were
relegated to the first floor (which you would think would the better place). We needed some muscle
power to bring the childrens' books from the filing cabinet downstairs and they were heavy BUT the
good thing was that the children really needed them and they seemed so engrossed in their session that we
went a bit overtime.
We also had fun with Nurse Kay as she taught the kids skeletal parts. This was the first time I learned what phalanges were! Good thing God provides a way for us to teach the kids when we don't know what they are talking about!
Even if you have no clue what phalenges are (just google it),
please come and share what
you do know! We will just help each other
out!
The children do need your support. We want them to be the best
they can be. Their street life environment is not conducive for them to study
at home. Many drop out but with your help, we can help them to love
learning.
Come this Saturday?

Ballpens to Balloons?
Greetings Volunteer
Ballpens to Balloons? Sometimes we think we need ballpens when all we need are balloons! A volunteer texted me right before the session what she needs to bring. In my mind I texted "ballpens". When the volunteer arrived, she had balloons! My my what was I thinking?
So, after the session, we started giving away the balloons. The children had giant smiles on their faces.
God knew better. He knew ballpens wouldn't make them smile like this!
The children do need your support. We want them to be the best they can be. Their street life environment is not conducive for them to study at home. Many drop out but with your help, we can help them to love learning.

Treating Kids TODAY!
Greetings Volunteer!
Happy Independence Day!
At the start of every semester, we remind the
children to do their best,
so they can be the best they can be. But also...
so we can treat them!
The goal was to get at least an average of 80 on all their subjects.
This is the highest count we have so far! We are
treating 19 children
today (whereas before only 5 could make it).
We want to apologize for the extremely late
notice!!! It's because
we have been working out details with the children and the foundation
so it's only today that we got permission for the event.
We will be at Jackman Mall, Munoz https://foursquare.com/v/jackman-plaza/4df894e4b0fb9724c5d8de1d
today June 12, 2014
starting 1 PM onwards
We will meet you at the 2nd floor escalator
Please let me know if you can make it. My cell
is 0998-551-3165
Blessings!

May 17 Exercises for Small Sizes
Film Showing: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Greetings Volunteer!
So what's happening this Saturday?
We are going to have Vicky, a fitness instructor,
lead us into simple
exercises that the children will
enjoy!
Next we will have a sponsored party by the
Lambino party. They
have recently come from Japan and will teach
children's exercises
as well! Afterwards there will be some games and
prizes and food!
YEEYYYY!
Now the Lambino family are celebrating (secretly)
the birthday of their
son so they will be inviting other people to help
out in the games.
SOOOO it will be quite a crowd.
We already have about 10 volunteers so I didn't
make a shoutout online
anymore. We would rather wish to meet up with
you for any ideas
you have for future summer events we can do at
the center (if too
crowded, a separate planning meeting will
ensue).
Last week was fun! The children were mesmerized
by the fantabulous
graphics from the movie "Cloudy with a Chance of
Meatballs"! It gave the
volunteers some time to plan for future events
like the Childrens Choir!!!
(exciting!)

May 3 at the Movies!
Greetings Volunteer!
VERY IMPORTANT!!!
This Saturday we are changing venues!!! We will
be at the He Cares
Center in Project 6.
ALSO TAKE NOTE: I have a new
cellphone number so please
disregard the old number! Smart 0998-551-3165
Happy Easter season!
We've had quite a long break since our last
session was last April 5.
Our basic drama
workshop for the children was very new and quite interesting!
Now we move onto another summer event, a film
showing!
Why a movie? So the children can enjoy while
listening to English
and in a way be more familiar with
it.
We are not yet sure which movie we will be
playing. It might be Ice Age
or another fun animation film. Do you have any
suggestions?
WHY NOT A FIELD TRIP?This summer is a
bit different. Due to an accident occuring to one of the children
from He Cares (not from our area), the foundation
is working on their safety rules
with DSWD. Until then, we are not allowed to
take the children out of the center.
We won't be meeting in Brgy. Bungad until this is
all worked out. Let's hope and pray
this is settled soon!
This Saturday, we will serve some merienda at
around 2:45pm. If you would like to bring
snacks (like some biscuits) so the children will
have something to munch on while the
movie is running, please do! The merienda will
be pancit and juice so it's okay as well if
you don't bring any. Please help us serve the
merienda and mingle with the children.
Bring a joke or magic trick if you
can!
On other news...
We are still working on Sunday tutoring. We are
still waiting for the number
of children from the area heads so we know how
many tutors we need.
Helping a child to love learning is surely a step
towards a brighter
future. Please
know that you don't have to be a teacher to join us. You never
know how much of an impact you will make on a
child from the streets.
Even for a short
while you can touch a life. You can touch the future!
Come this Saturday?
Please join us on:
