The Philippines is home to a staggering number of children who live on the streets. Faced with a multitude of every day challenges, many stop schooling. Some have taken on the task of encouraging the children to dream big for themselves and their families. These are the life and times of a volunteer tutor in the Philippines.

WHO: We are tutoring scholars of He Cares Foundation. They are trying to maintain a certain grade average to remain in the program. They live in informal settler communities.
WHAT: We will teach basic English and Math. We will have materials that we can use to practice their skills (books, worksheets, etc) and we will have an orientation and setup at 1 to 2PM. Tutoring is only 1 hour (from 2-3PM). If there is a slight chance you will be late, please WATCH THIS ORIENTATION VIDEO.
WHY: Our goal is to encourage the children to stay in school and to build their confidence that they can do it. Many of them are really smart and talented but they face tremendous challenges due to their environment, preventing them to even want to continue schooling.
HOW: We will help you with the different ways to tutor the child. From playing the dictionary game, to spelling, to multiplication drills.
WHEN: September 3, 2016 (Sat) 1-3 PM (pls come early if you're not sure how to get there)
WHERE: He Cares Mission Building, 9 Mines St. Proj.6, Quezon City

Directions: From SM North, ride proj6 jeep. Tell driver you'll get down Visayas McDonald's. Walk across Visayas ave. and pass small alley to go to Forestry Road. Walk right and then turn to the road to the right - that will curve to Mines Road.

Hands to Serve, Hearts to Love
Dear VolunTutor,
We are excited to try out the new He Cares venue for our tutoring! It's easy to go to so check out the directions below.
Since the children are on sembreak, please come armed to share study tips and educational games and drills that you can teach the children to do amongst themselves and hopefully have fun with.
Directions: From SM North Mall, ride proj6 jeep. Tell driver you'll get down Visayas McDonald's. Walk to DENR road then turn left 2nd road on left is Mines St. - #9
Come this Saturday?
We will need 30 volunteers. Please be sure to alert me if you plan to come - text 09985513165 so
you can be informed of any last minute announcements.
You don't have to be a whiz at Math and English, and no teaching experience is required - we just need you to listen to the children
and to help them read books and worksheets (provided) and maybe understand their lessons (if you need
assistance, other tutors may be asked). Don't be apprehensive about forgetting the basics
from gradeschool, we've forgotten too. It's a team and we help each other remember.
What's most important is that these children make a friend who encourages them to go on.
Just an hour to encourage them that learning can be enjoyable (or that it is possible
to understand) is more than enough. Seeing people who care is enough.

They Love to Learn!
Dear Voluntutor,
When I asked a first time volunteer how his time with the children went, he said, "They want to learn! It's not hard to teach them!" I was so happy to hear that!
Indeed they want to learn! The little kids walk about half an hour to the venuem after coming from the He Cares general assembly (which also tires them out). The come despite the other things they could do like play and just laze around. We hope you will come and help Them out.
Come this Saturday?
We will need 10 more volunteers. Please be sure to alert me if you plan to come - text 0917-835-4511 so
you can be informed of any last minute announcements.

Dear Volunteer,
The museum granted discounts to the children but the volunteers are not yet sure to get discounts so please make sure that you have P500 each in case we are not given the discount. If discounted it amounts to P250 each.
We are bringing along 20 children so we need volunteers to keep an eye on some kids and make sure no one gets lost. We can have our pictures taken with them too!
ART IN ISLAND
Address: 175 15th Ave., Brgy. Socorro, Cubao, Quezon City, 1109 Metro Manila

If you have a vehicle and can take in 3 children and 1 volunteer, please let me know.
Please be sure to alert me if you plan to come so
you can be informed of any last minute announcements.
*PLEASE ask for directions before Saturday because sometimes, we are
already doing the orientation and some volunteers are lost because we
are already busy and were not able to answer the calls.

Halo Halo Party with He Cares Kids
We will be having a halo halo session and either a film showing or another activity. We are still threshing out the details. Would you have a movie that would benefit the children? Let me know.
He Cares Foundation is a Christian non-profit organization that takes care of the needs of street children and their families.
In the effort to encourage the children to continue their schooling in the midst of various challenges from their environment, we have formed friendships with them and helped them with their academic needs. During summer, we try to organize fun activities for them to keep learning and enjoying life to the full!
Come this Saturday?
We will need 10 volunteers. If you are coming, please bring something for the halo halo. The children will be 20 + volunteers.
